Madison man returns from deployment
Navy Midshipman Matthew Piro of Madison recently returned from a six-month deployment to the Mediterranean Sea and Arabian Gulf while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS George Washington.
During deployment, Piro's ship traveled more than 50,000 miles, launched more than 10,000 sorties, dropped nine-and-a-half tons of ordinance and visited the ports of Greece, the United Arab Emirates, Portugal, Italy and Slovenia.
Piro is one of more than 10,000 Atlantic fleet sailors and marines aboard the ships of the USS George Washington Carrier Battle Group and USS Nassau Amphibious Ready Group.
