Madison County Record
A Madison police officer has been charged with first-degree attempted sodomy and has resigned before being fired.
The Alabama Bureau of Investigation, which investigated the case, charged Eric Gillespie, 41, of Huntsville, after a woman filed a complaint that Gillespie sexually assaulted her while he was on duty.
Gillespie was released on Sept. 26 from the Madison County Jail on a $15,000 bond.
Madison Police Chief Dan Busken notified Gillespie on Sept. 20 that his employment with the department would be terminated for violating city personnel and police department policies. Gillespie was assigned to administrative duties after the complaint had been filed on Sept. 1. Gillespie resigned rather than contest the termination.
Gillespie became a Madison police officer in 1999. He spent 20 years in the Army Military Police and served in Korea and Italy. He won eight service medals during his military career.
