Setting the record straight

By Staff
Dear Editor,
Referencing your letters from and Jackie Lanphere regarding the Madison City Council meeting of May 13
While the Beautification Board did solicit merchants and individuals for the flags and poles that are on Hughes Road, they did not check with the city to see if there might be problems with that location.
They also did not make provisions for the flags to be replaced by the businesses when they become worn.
The trees were there when the flagpoles were erected. Low growing shrubs, such as crepe myrtle, could have been placed there had any consideration been given to the trees interfering with the flags flying.
The city depended on the Beautification Board in the selection of plants, working with landscape architect Drew Crow and the firm that did the actual planting, Naturally Perfect.
And to set the record straight, Ray Stubblefield did not make the comment regarding taking a chainsaw to the trees. I made that remark knowing that all that was there knew it was made with humor, and to tease Council member Stubblefield who had taken the lead in obtaining funding for the landscaping on Hughes Road.
I am also at a loss as to how Jackie Lanphere knows what was said as she was not at the said meeting.
Sincerely,
Jim Reagan
Madison City Council District 4
