Schmitz recognized for legislation sponsorship

By Staff
Rep. Sue Schmitz will be honored for sponsoring the 2002 Unemployment Compensation Increase Bill that was recently passed on the last day of the legislative session. Under House Bill 341, eligible unemployment workers could receive a maximum increase in benefits from $190 to $210 per week, effective July 1, 2002. The bill also stabilizes employer taxes. Schmitz was presented a certificate of recognition on May 28.
Toney animal welfare organization has more byte.
Brooks Farm Animal Rescue in Toney has joined other animal welfare organizations in the state as a member of Petfinder.com, the largest and oldest virtual animal shelter. The Web site represents over 65,000 homeless animals at any one time in more than 3,700 shelters and rescue groups nationwide and in Canada. Petfinder.com facilitated over half a million adoptions last year. The Web site is free to potential adopters and to shelters and rescue groups through corporate sponsorship.
State observes Rabies Awareness, Dog Bite Prevention Week
June 2-8 has been designated as Rabies Awareness/Dog Bite Prevention Week in Alabama. To assist in public education about rabies and to encourage the annual vaccination of dogs and cats as required by law, a cooperative effort is being organized by the Alabama Department of Public Health, the Alabama Veterinary Medical Association, and the Alabama Cooperative Extension System. Public low-cost rabies clinics will be conducted in most counties throughout the state and public service announcements and education programs will be promoted. For more information, contact Madison County Rabies Officer Travis L. White, DVM at 859-2221.
